Write the product opportunity
Define the user, use, market problem, sales channel, target retail position and relationship to the rest of the range. Separate must-have outcomes from visual preferences. This helps the manufacturer recommend a viable starting construction without losing the commercial purpose.
Create the first specification
Record dimensions, size range, materials, construction, colour zones, branding, labels, accessories, packaging, order mix and destination markets. Add reference images only to clarify features. Identify claims or standards early because they can affect design and testing.
Develop and learn through samples
Treat each sample as an experiment with stated questions. Review fit, function, appearance, workmanship and complete presentation. Collect feedback from representative users and prioritise changes. Too many uncontrolled revisions can improve one area while creating a new issue elsewhere.
Lock cost and evidence together
Request pricing against the approved specification, variant schedule, packaging and delivery basis. Confirm tooling, testing, sample, inspection and freight assumptions. Finalise claims only after the required evidence is available, and keep substantiation with the product record.
Prepare production controls
Connect the approved sample to materials, patterns, artwork, labels, packaging and inspection points. Confirm pre-production submissions for custom materials or prints. Establish who can approve deviations and how the team will report progress.
Plan launch and continuity
Allow time for inspection, shipping, customs, receiving, photography and channel setup. Preserve final files, reports and shipment data. After launch, collect defect, return and user feedback by SKU so the next order improves from evidence rather than memory.
